Increasing Mobility for Seniors in Their Own Homes

Whether it is due to uncertainty in the economy or an increased desire to age in place, many older adults are choosing to remain in their own homes longer than in years past. Some are moving in with their adult children or extended family members.

Regardless of whether this is a temporary or permanent arrangement, oftentimes the senior needs physical changes made to their indoor and outdoor living environments in order to remain comfortable, independent and safe. By using a contractor knowledgeable about, and dedicated to, assisting those with physical limitations, families can assure themselves that the products they are installing and the structural accommodations they are making are financially responsible and are being done in the least invasive manner.

According to Holli Ehrlich, Account Services Manager with Mobility Consulting and Contracting in New Jersey, “It is important to match the home modification with a person’s individual challenges.” In addition to structurally widening doorways and hallways, building ramps or putting in an elevator, Ehrlich explained that simple non-invasive modifications can also be offered such as installing grab bars and handrails throughout the home (not just in the shower), making thresholds flush, lowering shelves and cabinetry, using non-slip surfaces and installing raised toilets and chair lifts.

Of course, one of the biggest concerns when doing any home renovation is how to pay for it. In addition to private pay there are sometimes grants available from public funds as well as private organizations. It is also important to research health insurance and long term care insurance plans and programs. Lastly, local, state and federal laws might offer some support (such as waiving permit fees or relaxing certain guidelines) when a home is being made mobility accessible.
